DANBURY, CT - Funeral services were held today for a U.S. airman once stationed in Newburgh who was killed in Afghanistan last week.
Staff Sgt. Todd J. Lobraico Jr. was killed Sept. 5 when his unit was attacked by small-arms fire near Bagram Airfield.
During the service at Western Connecticut University, a chaplain said Lobraico was leading a team of eight on a foot patrol and sacrificed himself to save the others.
After the ceremony, the hearse carrying his casket was escorted by a Stamford police motorcade while officers stood in salute. Lobraico's father is a member of the Stamford police force.
Staff Sgt. Lobraico was awarded the Purple Heart and buried with full military honors in Sherman, Conn.
