PEARL RIVER - Local officials are spreading the word that people can get home safely from next week's St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Members of the Rockland County Sheriff's Department were out in Pearl River yesterday handing out fliers about the "Alert Cab Program." Free cab rides will be available to revelers to cut down on drunken driving.

Police, bar owners and local taxi companies are joining together to provide lifts for people who live within 10 miles of certain St. Patrick's Day events. "We've been doing this in the three counties for 10 years. It's been a success, and last year we gave over 200 rides," says Tom Kennedy, of Dana Distributors.
