NEWBURGH - A Newburgh man found himself in hot water after falling through thin ice on Muchattoes Lake Wednesday.

That's because firefighters rescued 28-year-old Daniel Rios after he allegedly shoplifted and led police on a chase.

Police say Rios stole clothes and other items from the Sears store at the Newburgh Mall after 3 p.m.

As he fled, he allegedly ran a vehicle off the road. Police say they followed him into the city of Newburgh.

Police say Rios left the car and ran onto Muchattoes Lake on foot -- then fell through the ice.

Newburgh firefighters say they don't have much experience performing ice rescues, and several of them also fell through thin ice during the operation to retrieve Rios. They are all OK.

Rios was hospitalized with early stages of hypothermia, but is also expected to be OK -- at least from his injuries. He faces charges of petty larceny, reckless endangerment and several traffic infractions.
