YONKERS - Firefighters say battling a massive blaze at a Yonkers apartment building proved to be even more difficult due to the extreme cold.

One person died in the fire early Wednesday morning at 1 Hawley Terrace, near Warburton and Odell avenues.

Firefighters tell News 12 that they had to dodge large tree limbs that fell due to the weight of the ice forming from the water gushing from their fire hoses.

The biggest obstacle for crews was the bone-chilling temperatures that caused at least one fire hydrant to freeze.

About 80 firefighters attacked the flames throughout the day.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, of the Yonkers Fire Department, said it takes a lot of energy to stay warm and that they tried to rotate crews as best as they could, but they ran out of people.

Officials say they would have liked to have rotated even more firefighters in and out while battling the fire, but they say they just don't have enough resources in the city.
