Fire damages popular eatery in Mount Vernon

Firefighters found flames shooting from the back of the United Corner Luncheonette in Mount Vernon (5/20/14)

MOUNT VERNON - A late night fire has damaged a popular eatery in Mount Vernon.

Emergency crews took over the corner of Gramatan Avenue and Fiske Place after receiving reports of heavy smoke coming from the United Corner Luncheonette around 9:45 p.m.

When crews arrived, they found fire coming from the rear of the building on the first floor where the luncheonette is located, and it was a bit of a challenge to get inside to the flames. "We had roll-down gates to contend with and plate glass so we had heavy fire upon arrival," says Deputy Fire Chief Tom Duffy.

It took about 14 firefighters an hour and a half to get everything under control. They were able to contain the fire mostly to the luncheonette, which suffered severe damage. The second-floor commercial space above the store sustained some damage as well.

Officials say the blaze could have been much worse since the luncheonette is located in a five-story building with apartments above. They say none of the living areas in the building were affected and there were no injuries. No word yet on the cause of the fire.
