NORWALK - Fairfield University, a Jesuit institution, was overjoyed when the announcement was made Wednesday that a Jesuit cardinal was chosen as the new pope.

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was announced as the Roman Catholic church's new pope to a crowd of thousands in Vatican City.

Fairfield University's president says the fact that the new Pope Francis is a Jesuit creates a special connection for the school.

This is the first time in over a millenium that a pope was chosen from outside of Europe.
