MIDDLETOWN - More than 26 pounds of heroin is now off the streets after a major drug bust in Orange County.

During a routine traffic stop on Wednesday afternoon, police say they stopped two men from California in a tractor-trailer truck on I-84 in Wawayanda because the vehicle didn't have state tax decals. The vehicle appeared empty, but officials say when police started searching, they found the drugs in a hidden compartment inside the truck.

The heroin is estimated to be worth $12 million on the streets.

"When you look at this quantity of heroin, you're looking at the single most largest seizures I have ever seen in Orange County at this time in one location," says Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.

Enrique Mendoza, 38, and Joaquin Hernandez, 34, were charged with criminal possession in the first degree and sent to the Orange County Jail with no bail.

Officials are not saying where the truck was heading.

Hoovler says his office will seek severe punishment for narcotics traffickers. The two men could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
