ORANGEBURG - A nursing school student from Poughkeepsie was killed in a car accident Saturday morning, the day before she was going to graduate from Dominican College.

Vaughna Jarvis, 23, was driving home on the Taconic State Parkway after an overnight nursing shift at Phelps Memorial Hospital. State police say she had just passed another vehicle when she lost control, went into a ditch and rolled over.

"She was liked by everyone she came in contact with and many of the students had a very difficult time this weekend," says Dr. Nancy DiNona, Director of Nursing Education at Dominican College in Orangeburg. DiNona says Jarvis showed compassion for her patients and always went the extra mile.

At graduation Sunday, Jarvis' mother came onstage carrying her daughter's cap and gown and received her nursing degree.
