SLOATSBURG - New York State Thruway drivers are being warned about identity theft at gas stations following the discovery of a credit card skimming device at a Sunoco pump in Sloatsburg.

A skimming device was attached to the front of a legitimate scanner and used to steal credit card and identity information. The devices have been around for years, but thieves are constantly improving them.

Officials say the device was only there for a short time.

Sunoco officials are hoping to find whoever planted the device. The New York State Police and Secret Service are investigating the case.

New York State Thruway officials urge motorists who have bought gas at the location to scrutinize their credit and debit cards accounts for any possible fraudulent use.
