YONKERS - Fireworks aren't usually associated with Memorial Day weekend, but this year could be an exception with a display of cosmic pyrotechnics.

If the weather cooperates, News 12 Meteorologist Joe Rao says the Hudson Valley will see a new meteor shower that might pepper our skies with debris shed by a comet.

The impending star shower will actually be caused by dust shed from comet "Linear," a name, derived from the robotic telescope that discovered it back in 2003. It's a tiny comet that dips inside the orbit of Earth once every five years as it loops around the sun.

Rao says Earth is due for an encounter with debris shed by this comet early Saturday morning between 1:50 a.m. and 4:20 a.m. He advises to look overhead and into the northern part of the sky where the meteors will be emanating from. He also urges viewers to get far away as possible from bright lights. If you're in the city, you'll see a few shooting stars, but the darker your skies the more meteors you're going to see.
