Cortlandt Manor mourns Capt. Clayton Carpenter, killed in helicopter crash in Georgia
CORTLANDT MANOR - A Cortlandt Manor native was killed in a helicopter crash last week, leaving his hometown in mourning.
Capt. Clayton Carpenter, 31, was piloting a Blackhawk helicopter in a training mission when Pentagon officials say it made a "hard landing." Carpenter was killed in the accident and two other soldiers were injured. The accident happened at the Hunter Army Airfield, outside of Savannah, Georgia.
Carpenter graduated from Lakeland High School in 2001, where he was a star athlete, and won an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated in 2005. Carpenter's devastated family is asking for privacy, but people in town say they're also sadddened by the news.
