NEWBURGH - Catholics in Orange County are rejoicing tonight for the appointment of a new pontiff.

Students and staff at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh crammed into a professor's office to watch a live feed from the Vatican, waiting for the new pope to emerge. They say they were overjoyed witnessing the historical selection of Pope Francis, the first pope from South America.

Students and staff say this is not only a time filled with excitement, but a time filled with hope as they wait and see what this new leader brings to the Roman Catholic Church. They also said they were pleased to hear Pope Francis is a Jesuit, because they say members often have a strong focus on Catholic education.

Dr. Charles Zola, who heads Mount Saint Marys Catholic and Dominican Institute, says he hopes Pope Francis will shine a light on all the good in the church while working on important issues like poverty and the environment.
