HAWTHORNE - Supply shops are getting creative in the middle of a salt shortage across the northeast.

One hardware store in Hawthorne is selling a salt that some use to clean pools in summer.

The owners at Berger Hardware on Commerce Street say the salt that's usually saved for summer is already halfway gone due to the recent snowstorms.

Workers at the store say pool salt does the job just as well as street salt.  The only difference is the size of the rocks.

Customers say it's one of the few spots in town with supply, and they're snatching it up.

The store expects a regular shipment of street salt to arrive on Thursday.
