MOUNT VERNON - A pair of basketball games Friday night between the Mount Vernon Knights and Scarsdale Raiders doubled as a fundraiser for the family of Shamoya McKenzie, a 13-year-old Mount Vernon player shot and killed by a stray bullet on New Year's Eve.

McKenzie, an eighth-grader, played up on the varsity team. She was sitting in her mom's car, headed home from practice, when she was caught up in the crossfire of gang violence.

The suspected shooter, 21-year-old David Hardy, faces charges of murder and weapons possession.

Fans who packed the stands were asked to donate whatever they wished for the family, which amounted to more than $3,000.

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas and other members of the community observed a memorial ceremony at halftime.

"My only child has died," said Shamoya's mother, Nadine McKenzie, adding that she could not come to terms with why and how her daughter's death happened.
