NEW CITY - The young mother accused of murdering her newborn son and tossing him in a dumpster appeared in Rockland County Court this morning.
Maria Guaman-Guaman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges. Prosecutors say Guaman-Guaman gave birth to a baby boy in November and then strangled him before dumping him into a trash bin in Spring Valley.
The infant, known as "Baby Angel," was found later in a recycling center in Elmsford.
Today's hearing was on the issue of whether she understands the proceedings. Guaman-Guaman grew up speaking Quechua, a mountain dialect from her native Ecuador. She allegedly confessed to police in Spanish.
She is due back in court next month.
