Attorney: Jojo John distraught over deadly boat crash

Hudson River deadly boat crash investigation focuses on alcohol (7/29/13)

PIERMONT - The driver in the deadly boat crash on the Hudson River Friday night could face additional charges today.

Police say Jojo John, 35, of Nyack, was driving the boat that crashed into a construction barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge on Friday night. John has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault but those charges are likely to be upgraded, according to state police.

According to cops, they have probable cause to believe John was drunk at the time of the accident.

David Narain, attorney for John, says his client is still recovering from his injuries so he's only been able to get bits and pieces of John's version of the accident. "My client also does know about the accident, he knows what happened, he knows what happened to his friends, he's extremely distraught," says Narain.

Bride-to-be Lindsey Stewart and her fiancĂ© Brian Bond, of Piermont, who were to be married in two weeks, were on the boat along with their best man Mark Lennon, of Pearl River. Stewart's body was found in the Hudson Saturday, and a Jet Skier found Lennon's body on Sunday morning.

The Rockland County medical examiner says Stewart died from head injuries and drowning. Lennon died from injuries and drowning as well.

Officials say Bond, the would-be groom, is still hospitalized.

One of the passengers injured in the crash has been released from the hospital. But police are not releasing that passenger’s name or the names of some of the other passengers because they are now considered witnesses to an alleged crime.

Investigators were also looking into whether that barge was properly lit. Coast Guard officials now say the barge was lit according to regulation but extra lights were installed Saturday night.

The district attorney says a grand jury will be assembled to review the facts of the case. John is due in court this Thursday.
