YONKERS - A state assemblywoman is trying to raise the age of consent to get married from 14 to 17.

All a 14-year-old needs to get a marriage license in New York is parental and a judge's permission.

Child marriage happens about 250 times a year, but state Assemblywoman Amy Paulin says that is 250 too many. She has introduced a bill to raise the legal age to 17.

“We should not be allowing child marriage. It’s discrimination. It’s discrimination towards young women,” she says.

According to published reports, close to 250,000 teens between 14 and 18 were married across the nation between the years 2000 and 2010.
