GREENBURGH - The state attorney general warned immigrant communities Wednesday of potential scams involving fake Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office has received numerous reports following last week's ICE raids, which rounded up immigrants staying in the country illegally for deportation.

In one instance, a would-be scammer approached a potential victim and told him he would be deported if he didn't hand over money.

"Immigration officials will never demand money from you or threaten deportation if you don't pay," Schneiderman says. "That's clearly a scam."

To report potential fraud or other issues regarding immigration services, contact the Attorney General’s Immigration Services Fraud Unit Hotline at (866) 390-2992.
