YONKERS - Five people connected to Yonkers grocery stores have been arrested on charges they stole more than a $1 million from the government's food stamps program.
According to the federal complaint, the owner and an employee of the Sam Deli Grocery Store, located at 156 Palisade Ave., pocketed more than $250,000 from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP.
Prosecutors say the worker would allegedly charge more than the value of the items purchased on the SNAP debit cards and keep the difference.
Prosecutors also accuse 51-year-old Gloria Garcia with defrauding the SNAP program of more than $800,000.
The owner and employee of 42 Post Deli Grocery is accused of pocketing more than $200,000.
Investigators say each of the defendants has been running the alleged scam for several years.
Each suspect is facing up to five years in prison.
