150-year-old New City house catches fire

NEW CITY - A historic house in New City is lucky to be standing after an early morning fire today.

Fire officials say flames broke out in a 150-year-old house at 91 Park Ave. around 5 a.m.

A fire the fireplace burnt a hole into the cellar, but 35 firefighters arrived quickly and were able keep it from spreading to the rest of the house. Investigators say the homeowners were lucky because the fire could have hit a gas line, which would have blown up the entire house.

The homeowners were able to escape the flames safely.
