BRONX - A 10-car crash on the Bronx-Yonkers border created a traffic nightmare in southern Westchester this morning.
The chain reaction crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. on the southbound Major Deegan Expressway between exits 13 and 11. All southbound lanes were closed on and off as emergency workers treated the crash victims and cleared the wreckage. One northbound lane was also closed for emergency vehicles.
All lanes of the expressway were finally reopened just before 9 a.m.
Icy conditions are suspected to have caused the pileup. Three people have been sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Overflow traffic also congested nearby roadways such as the Hutchinson River Parkway, Cross County Parkway and Saw Mill Parkway. Bee-Line buses traveling in the Yonkers area experienced up to 45-minute delays.
It's days like this that caused Max Dolenk to give up driving into the city. "You think you're beating rush hour traffic, but in reality you're sitting in your car and now it just takes me an hour, I just take the bus to the subway makes my life easier," says Dolenk.
