MOUNT VERNON - Mount Vernon residents took time out this morning for a moment of silence to honor the victims lost in Newtown last Friday.

Church bells rang out 26 times to symbolize each of the victims killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. At City Hall, leaders read poems while Mayor Ernie Davis spoke of the importance of togetherness and the human spirit.

Other officials said measures need to be taken so similar atrocities can be prevented.
