MOUNT VERNON - Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis’ Chief of Staff Nichelle Johnson, who also serves as the city’s top attorney, has been ensnared in an ethics investigation launched by the city.

Johnson is accused of driving the car of controversial publisher Sam Zherka, who has sued the city twice.

The Mount Vernon Board of Ethics is investigating Johnson, who used to work for Zherka. The board will probe whether the use of the car is considered a gift that might violate the city’s code.

Davis said he is not concerned about what car Johnson is driving. Davis himself is also at the center of a federal investigation of his finances.
