YONKERS - Gov. Cuomo has announced that $20 million in funding will go toward setting up bus rapid transit on the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

The money will be used to add technology and ease congestion across the new span.

Some commuters say their daily trip to work can take anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour or two. The improvements to BRT promise to cut travel times by as much as 25 percent.

Special Advisor to the Governor Brian Conybeare says the buses will fit in small lanes to beat the traffic and pick up speed.

Recommendations came from the Mass Transit Task Force, which is made up of 31 elected officials from Westchester, Orange, Rockland and Putnam counties.

The state is also applying for a transportation grant of $26.7 million, bringing the funding for BRT to more than $40 million.

The goal of the program is to increase bus ridership and get people out of their cars and into mass transit.

The bridge is under construction and scheduled to open in 2018.
